Cellist Yo-Yo Ma is moving his Silk Road Project from Rhode Island to Harvard University.

The 12-year-old nonprofit organization brings together musicians from different backgrounds and traditions and has had ties with Harvard since 2005.

Harvard President Drew Faust says the move to university-owned property in Boston will help foster new artistic and cultural opportunities for students and locals.

The Silk Road Ensemble features performers from more than 20 countries and will give annual public performances at Harvard.

A Silk Road spokeswoman says the move comes at the end of a five-year affiliation with the Rhode Island School of Design. She says the organization remains open to future collaborations with the school.
